Coral Reef Fish Monitoring

Coral reefs can be described as the rain forests of the sea. One census found 3,467 species of algae, plants, and animals associated with coral reefs. Protection and wise use of Florida's coral reef habitat is our primary concern. The long-term Coral Monitoring Project (CRMP) is the most comprehensive coral assessment program ever established in the Florida Keys.

The State Wildlife Grants program has funded a comprehensive sampling strategy to better monitor coral reef fish species so they can be effectively managed. With coral bleaching and the decline of reef fishes an ongoing problem, the project, which involves the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, shall aid in recovering the best abundant coral reef left in the continental United States; these reefs and these fishes that depend upon them from the ecological backbone of the Florida Keys marine system.
