Support Dedicated Wildlife Funding in Climate Change Legislation
Global warming is the single most urgent threat to the future of wildlife and the natural systems that sustain both wildlife and people. The 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report concluded that up to a third of plant and animal species worldwide are likely to be "committed to extinction" by 2050 if we do not take action to manage climate change.
As fish and wildlife are increasingly affected by global warming, bills addressing climate change represent a tremendous opportunity for the wildlife community to achieve the stable funding state wildlife agencies need to implement the wildlife action plans and protect wildlife from global warming. Now is the time to make your voice heard by speaking out in support of the inclusion of wildlife funding as a standard component of any climate change bill!
On June 26, 2009, the House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act, historic legislation that takes the first vital steps to address climate change, safeguard wildlife and natural resources, and move America closer to increasing our energy security and developing a clean energy economy.
The bill includes language that provides safeguards for fish, wildlife and natural resources in a warming world. Additionally, it provides one percent of revenues from a cap and trade system to protect and restore domestic natural resources from climate change over the next 10 years and increases the allocation to four percent by 2027. Even though this landmark legislation has passed in the House, our fight is far from finished. Significantly more dedicated funding will ultimately be needed to address the impacts of global warming on our natural resources.
As the Senate works towards completing its comprehensive climate legislation, it is vital that funding for natural resources is increased from what is provided in the House bill.
Here's How You Can Help
1) Please call, email, or fax your Senators and ask them to support comprehensive climate and energy legislation that dedicates 5% of the total allowance value for natural resources adaptation in order to safeguard fish and wildlife, and the natural resources on which we all rely.
2) Organize meetings with Senators and/ or their staff to deliver the same message.
